His agent appears to be very 'active' and apparently the deal is a bit to rich for Villa - combined with other fees, agent fees etc. So I think they are well and truly looking at a deal beyond our level sadly.

He could easily sign a new contract with a release clause that would allow him to go to any club that was, say, playing Champions League or even Europa League if they paid a certain amount. But running down his contract so that the transfer fee would be less (or zero if he lets it expire) allows a new club to pay a bigger signing bonus.

So it's a balancing act. Does he settle for his current pay level and the risk of a career-ending injury with that big payday in mind, or does he sign an extension on better money with the risk of a lower signing bonus down the line?

I don't think he will.
Makes sense to run down his contract now.

IMO, Biss wouldn't be interested in playing for Newcastle or Villa, so wouldn't be agreeing personal terms no matter what they come up with.

He can wait out his contract and take an enormous signing on fee when he does.
A bit of a risk that he gets injured or that things go wrong in other areas, but I can't see him signing a new contract with us.

In fairness we get 3 seasons of a £150k pw footballer for a fraction of that price and miss out on a big transfer fee.
Annoying, but so it goes.

We have a fair few playeres outy of contract the same time, and there is also comments basically saying that we will be without players at the end of NEXT season as no one is signing

Isn't the likelihood that the club are actually ion top of it all, and are engaged in talks with all of them? some of which may be quite advanced

it may well be that Bissouma leaves in the summer, but who is to say that he wont sign a contract (with these new for UK release clauses that everyone seems to think are being added). That makes for a big payday for him, the club, and seems a win-win for everyone.

Whilst the prospect of the investigation progressing to charges does seem to be receding now, its a hell of a punt for a club to spunk £50 million with a chance of it all going to waste should that occur

Bissouma is one of our best players. He was signed in 2018 under Hughton and we probably were not paying the type of wages that we are now, so you assume he is probably on a below average deal compared to a lot of the squad. Many other players have been rewarded with new contracts recently, even players we signed after Biss (like Webster etc) - we have a habit of extending deals as early as possible to tie players down to long term deals, ensure they are paid at a level to match their ability. Also 1st January 2023, if Bissouma hasn't signed a deal with us he can sign a 'pre-contract' with a European club as well as his agent will be looking to secure his next move as his contract runs down. This risks him being told *exactly* what an Arsenal, Man Utd, Spurs, Chelsea, Man City, whoever will want to pay him for a move in the summer - and at that point we simply can't compete.

For a club as well run as Brighton you can only assume the fact that Bissouma has not signed an improved deal is either because - 1) we don't rate him. Or 2) the player / his agent think they can get better elsewhere.

Common sense. Obviously he has been offered contracts and turned them down. You dont willingly let your best player enter the final 12 months of the contract before negotiating. No club does that. At this point it is highly unlikely that he, as a player who would be interesting for a lot of clubs, would all of a sudden sign a new deal with Brighton. It just isnt happening.

because 12 months ago he was nothing like the player he is now- he was good, but no one was seriously talking about £50 million being a minimum price for him to leave this window? Fast forward a few months and just as his playing had settled down to becoming seriously and consistently top 4 class and other teams would have started to think world class potential his off field troubles became very much to the fore. (early October)

So IMO contact extensions would perhaps have been started and possibly well advanced but came to a shuddering halt on 6th October and are likely only to have resumed in earnest a few weeks ago. I think most other clubs would have been waiting as well to see how things turned out (and possibly still are) and the Greenwood situation will have highlighted how quickly these things can appear and develop and may have reminded potential suitors that Bissouma is by no means out of the woods yet.

It is of course all conjecture on our part- a shiny new contract may be waiting for him to return from AFCON and he is just waiting to sign it depending what, if anything happens today. Its also possible he has decided he is off and is steadfastly refusing to sign a deal, knowing that in a years time he can sign a pre contract and earn a massive signing on fee as a free agent in that summer.

I just think there is are a large number of people who always look for the worst scenarios and seem to think the club has no forward planning and anything that happens happens to us, not because of us

I thought loads of contracts are running out at the same time including Mac and Tross? Does mean either we don’t rate them or they’re refusing to sign contracts too?
