The Astro Bot games are fun platformers, Minecraft is (I suspect) well known to all parents, and has replaced Lego, with the added advantage of not having to tread on a Minecraft brick in bare feet.

All my favourites bar one or two have been mentioned. Skyrim I could play forever, smashed both of the Horizon's over Christmas and new year, Red Alert (many a fun hour editing the rules.ini file and changing the attacks of the dogs to be Tesla Coils at short range and Cruiser rounds at long range.) and Goldeneye (no Oddjobs).

Two that I haven't seen, or may have missed. Total Annihilation and Diablo 2/3 (can't decide between the two).
I was just thinking, how has no one mentioned Skyrim? I could also play that game forever. I think it's my all time favorite game. It set the bar for RPG Openworld games. For me it was genre defining.
I played Oblivion and New Vegas before, and loved them. But when Skyrim came out its was, holy s*** what have they gone and done. It really was incredible. Fallout 4 built on it, and is equally impressive. But it was Skyrim that came along first and changed things.
There was a headline in a review when it first came out that i thought was perfect, "Skyrim - undeniably better than real life."

Expectation of a Oblivion remake/remaster announcement tomorrow, possibly even coming out very very soon

So many great games mentioned already. Lovely to see Bubble Bobble get a mention. I'll add Rainbow Islands here too as its sequel.

David Brabin's Elite and vector graphics changed my 80s world. Once the docking computer was bought and the Blue Danube played, it was perfect.

I played Civilisation all night at college. Heroes and Might and Magic 3 got 2 and half days non-stop with eating and sleeping breaks. One more turn...

Skyrim is peerless. The music, the lore, the shouts, the side quests, the dragons. I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow in the knee.

As for in-game cut scenes, the one that dropped my jaw was from the original Command and Conquer with Kane (Joseph Kucan) freeing up Seth's role.

Peace through power!

V fond memories of Impossible Mission, Emlyn Hughes International Soccer, International Karate, Bruce Lee.and Daley Thompson's Decathlon on the Commodore 64.

Then Micro Machines , Desert Strike and EA Hockey (possibly the greatest multi player game of all time) on the mega drive.

After that I never really gamed.

Just out of interest..... I don't have a desktop and my laptop is just a cheap Acer I run aversion of Cinnamon Mint on.

What's the best way to do some decent retro gaming for nostalgia? One of those Raspberry Pi things? Just looking for Spectrum, C64, Megadrive, SNES really....

There are literally thousands of ways of doing it these days - your PC would probably be fine for the older stuff. You can get bootable images of Batocera so you can boot off a memory stick and not have to fanny around with installing emulators on Mint.

Raspberry Pi will work fine if you are happy fiddling to set it up - no need for more than a Pi2 or 3 for the systems you specify.

If you just want a quick fix then there are emulators you can run in your browser

https://megadrive-emulator.com/ (Needs an extension so at your own risk)
