That makes two (that I can think of; there may be others) of our very promising youngsters who have walked away from a contract with us and have now started playing in the PL (Shim Mhueka at Chelsea being the other one). Will be disappointing if Duffus turns out to be the next. I realise that it is part of the model that we lose our top players (for a good price); not so good when we can't hold on to our best youngsters - hope this doesn't turn out to be a trend.

It’s the nature of youth football.

We can’t moan, we pick up youth players from teams lower down the totem pole too.

Driven by our business model, I think all players from seasoned pros down to children increasingly see us as a transition club i.e. a club you join in order to transition to bigger and better things at the first available opportunity

It’s a shame but I totally get why players like him don’t want to sign a new contract with us. I don’t think I would. How is he going to break into this team and play regularly any time soon? It’s not going to happen. Yes, he could sign and then go on loan somewhere for a year, but he’ll be in the same position when he gets back, except tied to a contract on lower wages than he’d get if he signed for Leverkusen or someone now.

Incidentally the same age as Cozier Duberry, who left Arsenal under pretty much identical circumstances… to sign for us!

ACD has gone on loan though - no idea whether he was happy about it or not, but he's doing it. I don't think Duffus has ever gone out on loan (unless it was a short loan to a local on-league team) - maybe he should have tried it? Is he guaranteed a first team place anywhere else yet (unless he drops down a few levels, which doesn't appear t be in the plan)? I wouldn't be too sure.................

If you look at post #44 you will see it is reported that a loan move to Denmark for Duffus was blocked in January as he wouldn't sign a new deal with Albion.

We would have told him before he signed that we planned to send him out on loan/what his pathway is.

So you do agree he hasn't gone out on loan then? That would be something!
My point was clearly that just as ACD left Arsenal after the club made signing a new contract a precondition of going out on loan, Duffus looks to be doing the same here having been denied an overseas loan in January because he wouldn’t sign a new contract
