Starters Roy Wood - Move, Electric Light Orchestra, Wizard

Vince Clark - Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Erasure

I must admit, I'm struggling for 3 proper commercially successful bands

Plenty of two's . . . and people in bands, then solo.

session playing doesn't count . . .

edit . . . . I meant Paul Rogers?

Stevie Winwood:
Spencer Davis Group
Traffic
Blind Faith.

But it depends what you mean by “lead/formed”.

I only just spotted that . . . 'Founding member' there aren't many who started . . .Weller, Jam/TSC/Solo/a few odd projects which weren't much Scale wise . .

The Fatherland
Damon Albarn had Blur, Gorillaz and The Good, The Bad, the Queen although the last one were not anywhere near as big as the other two.

Lead in a group is an interesting one . . . . Not always or often the singer/front man. The who being a good example.

Weller lead the Jam, without doubt . . . . Mike Barson probably lead Madness?

Ian Dury was Ian Dury . . . . The BLockheads are all leaders. . . . .

Supergroups like Cream are an oddity . . . JAck Bruce leader, Clapton the rising star. Baker . . . Unmanageable loose cannon?!

Maynard James Keenan - Tool, A Perfect Circle, Pucsifer. Diminishing returns arguably and never ‘mainstream’ but have always had a following.

He was involved with Green Jelly before that but not a founding member.

Burgess Hill
Ritchie Blackmore

Deep Purple
Rainbow
Blackmore's Night

To be honest, I've never heard of Blackmore's Night but assumed he had more than the first two. Bearing in mind the amount of changes to the line ups of Deep Purple and more so Rainbow they should both count as multiple bands!!
