I'm a lapsed Catholic. I'm in favour of women priests

I'm also in favour of priests being allowed to marry but only if they love one another
Priests were allowed to marry up until circa 15th century when there was a lot of corruption. The vow of poverty forgotten, priests were accruing land and wealth for themselves and instead of it staying in the church, was left to their families. The Borgias in particular were infamous, creating a dynasty.
If a married man wants to become a Roman priest, he can keep his wife and family. Several Anglicans have done this.

There is no reason why a new Pope couldn’t change the celibacy rule to allow priests to marry.

Women priests are a different matter altogether as scripture says a woman shouldn’t be in governance in a church. That goes across the denominations, except CofE and Methodists. Women can be leaders but not in charge.

Meanwhile, a pile on against countries like Saudi Arabia is fair game amongst Catholics.

The Catholic Church has a wealth akin to Elon Musk who totally refuses to use his money for good and to help the poorest in the world, he’s a greedy, nasty, hateful c**t.
What’s the Vatican’s excuse?

The wealth is tied up with buildings and land, but I appreciate what you are saying. There are lots of Catholic charities that are doing good, Mother Theresa being an excellent example, but aren't as publicised, whereas Elon Musk has yet to shown he has any charity at all.

I am ex Anglican now in a free church. My interest is in the history of the church and British history.

They do a lot of good but I agree they could do a lot more. As far as Elon goes, what good does he do?! His cars are overrated, he’s ruined Twitter and made it basically a Nazi site riddled with p orn and he fancies himself as a politician.

Prince William managed to get a ticket for the funeral, I notice.

Maybe he missed out on a Villa ticket for Wembley, so he decided to head to Rome instead.

In all seriousness, it's quite a sight.

Given the choice between attending a funeral and being in the general vicinity of 30,000 Palace fans, I think I'd do the same as the Prince.

I did a tour of the Vatican a few years ago and they have a huge collection of priceless art, statues etc ,only a small sample of which is actually on display, so it’s not completely tied up.

Edit, just googled it and the collection is estimated to be worth up to £15 billion.

The Vatican Museum is, insofar as one can ever grade these things, one of the greatest museums in the world. It always reminds me of the great Steven Wright joke about one day wanting to visit the museum with all the heads and arms from all the statues in it. It exists: it’s basically the Vatican Museum. And then you get to the rooms painted by Rafael, the Sistine Chapel etc etc.

Seriously, what a show this is and what a theatre for it. Even for a nonbeliever like me.

I've been twice. Once just with my wife and once more as a family with kids. I feared the second time they wouldn't 'get it'. I needn't have worried. It was immense and blew them away.

Don't forget his dad was forced to delay his second wedding by 24hrs as his mother instructed him to attend the funeral of Pope john paul ii

So when Charles turns to William and says 'you must attend the funeral' and junior says 'I have something else on', you can imagine how that convo went. Perhaps he shouldn't have tried to beat his brother up as he could have delegated to him.

Can't remember why I was in Rome recently, but did the tour of the Vatican. Just WOW.
Is it just me that thinks the blanket news coverage is a little OTT?
This is The Pope. One of the most important figures in the world. I too am a little disappointed at the way this thread has gone. The Queen had similar coverage on foreign TV.
