He seemed to me to be everything a man of God should be, humble, compassionate, totally selfless and caring about matters of justice, the planet and everything that matters.I'm an atheist but I saw him as a decent and serious man in a time of idiots and monsters. RIP.
The Papal equivalent of Josh Widdicombe at the Edinburgh FestivalPope Paul vi died in the heat of high summer and apparently stunk st Peters out
I have little doubt this will be the case….. but hope it won’t be.I don’t want to derail the RIP thread so this is a debate for another time.
Pope Francis spoke out in many ways to reform the RC position on many things and although nothing changed doctrinally, was a much loved Pope of integrity and passion - I think he engendered a lot of respect from Catholics and non-Catholics worldwide.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a swing back towards a much more conservative, anti-liberal Pontiff.
You have every right to criticise Islam or Christianity within the boundaries of the law of course. So being part of the community doesn’t matter. All religions should be defended or criticised by the left you have the right to do that.Since it has been brought up (women priests, and which is more right wing, Catholicism or Islam, and why don't 'the left' criticize Islam's conservatism like they criticize Catholicism).....
Catholicism is the largest religion of 'the west'.
Many people who are left and liberal believe in a Catholic god.
Some who are gay or female would like to feel more part of their church.
So liberalizing the Catholic church is a topic of discussion among Catholics, with advocacy from the Catholic left.
If this seems out of kilter with Islam, there are several obvious reasons.
Islam is not a religion of 'the west'.
Few people who are left and liberal believe in Allah.
There may be gay and female 'western' Muslims who would like to feel more part of their 'church'. But I have never met any.
So liberalizing Islam is not much of a topic of discussion among Muslims, with no obvious advocacy from an Islamic left.
Of course it is possible that non-Catholic lefties criticize Catholicism for being reactionary and right wing.
Well, they would, wouldn't they?
Likewise non-Islamic lefties criticize Islam for being reactionary and right wing.
But do non-Catholic right-wingers criticize Catholicism for being reactionary and right wing?
Generally not.
Meanwhile, non-Catholic right wingers seem to bang on about Islam all the time.
Fancy that!

Only if he's an Amex card holder. Tho he can bring three cardinals up with him as guests on matchdaysFair. But can @Hiney climb two flights of stairs unaided and drink only very, very fine wine?
As Paul Merton revealed on HIGNFY last week, JD stands for Jumbo Dickhead.JD (No Ad)Vance: This will teach you to criticize American Tariff policy.
Pope: Did you pay the Vatican City tariff on that sickle?

Of course he can. That, however, is the face of a man who requires the assistance of two nuns to get out of a chair.Fair. But can @Hiney climb two flights of stairs unaided and drink only very, very fine wine?
That will only work if he believes in God.If his faith is any good he will be up and running again in the morning.
That doesn’t reflect the lifestyle or the attitudes of Pope Francis at all.Sweet dreams my little amigo
Barefoot and homeless in Rio De Janiero
Sleepin' on the step of a church
Whose doors are locked
Livin' in a cardboard box
Inside at the shrine
The Priest sips fine wine
Dines on fine food and looks for a sign
No mother no father
No shoes nor a bed
No place to relax and rest his weary head
Where his next meal will come from
Nobody knows
But everyone can see the church is covered in gold
