I'm an atheist but I saw him as a decent and serious man in a time of idiots and monsters. RIP.
He seemed to me to be everything a man of God should be, humble, compassionate, totally selfless and caring about matters of justice, the planet and everything that matters.

I don’t want to derail the RIP thread so this is a debate for another time.

Pope Francis spoke out in many ways to reform the RC position on many things and although nothing changed doctrinally, was a much loved Pope of integrity and passion - I think he engendered a lot of respect from Catholics and non-Catholics worldwide.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a swing back towards a much more conservative, anti-liberal Pontiff.
I have little doubt this will be the case….. but hope it won’t be.

Since it has been brought up (women priests, and which is more right wing, Catholicism or Islam, and why don't 'the left' criticize Islam's conservatism like they criticize Catholicism).....

Catholicism is the largest religion of 'the west'.
Many people who are left and liberal believe in a Catholic god.
Some who are gay or female would like to feel more part of their church.
So liberalizing the Catholic church is a topic of discussion among Catholics, with advocacy from the Catholic left.

If this seems out of kilter with Islam, there are several obvious reasons.

Islam is not a religion of 'the west'.
Few people who are left and liberal believe in Allah.
There may be gay and female 'western' Muslims who would like to feel more part of their 'church'. But I have never met any.
So liberalizing Islam is not much of a topic of discussion among Muslims, with no obvious advocacy from an Islamic left.

Of course it is possible that non-Catholic lefties criticize Catholicism for being reactionary and right wing.
Well, they would, wouldn't they?
Likewise non-Islamic lefties criticize Islam for being reactionary and right wing.

But do non-Catholic right-wingers criticize Catholicism for being reactionary and right wing?
Generally not.
Meanwhile, non-Catholic right wingers seem to bang on about Islam all the time.
Fancy that!
You have every right to criticise Islam or Christianity within the boundaries of the law of course. So being part of the community doesn’t matter. All religions should be defended or criticised by the left you have the right to do that.

I'm probably being facetious.

What about inverted wingers? Also, won't somebody think of the wing backs!

JD (No Ad)Vance: This will teach you to criticize American Tariff policy.

Pope: Did you pay the Vatican City tariff on that sickle?
As Paul Merton revealed on HIGNFY last week, JD stands for Jumbo Dickhead.

I really am troubled by the notion that JD Vance is one of the last major figures, if not the last, on the world stage with whom the Pope met.

President Trump’s response less than magnanimous. I guess words like humility and compassion aren’t really in his vocabulary, and he can’t find a nice way to say “woke loser”.

polar opposites!

The Avenue then Maloncho
Sweet dreams my little amigo
Barefoot and homeless in Rio De Janiero
Sleepin' on the step of a church
Whose doors are locked
Livin' in a cardboard box
Inside at the shrine
The Priest sips fine wine
Dines on fine food and looks for a sign
No mother no father
No shoes nor a bed
No place to relax and rest his weary head
Where his next meal will come from
Nobody knows
But everyone can see the church is covered in gold

Some strange and antiquated views expressed by some.

I am a lapsed catholic i.e. i don't go to church but it taught me some 'standards' about how to behave which I adhere to. Yes not all the preachers practised what they preached but that is because they are human nor am I condoning some behaviours which were down right criminal, in reality they were nothing to do with religion but abuse of power which happens in many (all) institutionalised organisations.

Newman still has RE lessons but these cover all religions. I told my kids if you don't like the concept of religious studies just treat it as a social history session.

That doesn’t reflect the lifestyle or the attitudes of Pope Francis at all.

in fact quite the opposite. He would have been looking after the little amigo.
